Colorblindness and a Post-Racial Society

While reading there was a quote that stood out to me, "'Race does not matter that much today so let's move on'" (Bonilla, 262).  People feel since that we have a black president that we have moved past racism and we live in a post-racial society. That is not true, race is still a prominent and important topic going on today. This article made me think back to our discussion on Race vs Ethnicity. We let our race define who we are by determining who has the power and the implications that come with being of a certain race. If we are color blind then none of this should apply to us today, but it does and that is the problem.

Whites do hold most of the high paying jobs, having the ability to go off to college, and not having to worry about being looked down upon all because of their race. What I think is important that the article talks about is challenging whites and being able to show that people of other races are obliged to have the same opportunities as whites. It is not fair that since a person is a certain race they are looked down upon and not taken as seriously as a white person all because of the color of their skin. People feel that race is such a touchy topic that they are afraid to address the issue, but talking about this issue will help everyone, people will start to notice that there is a problem, and something needs to be done to change it.

What I find most interesting is starting a new Civil Rights Movement. Which is interesting enough that the anniversary was not too long ago and talking about race issues will bring attention to people that racism still exists even though we live in the 21st century. Martin Luther King Jr. was not afraid to talk about the implications of race and how nothing has changed since the abolishment of slavery and I think people need to be reminded of that. Even though we have a black president on the anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement he did not talk about race and the injustices that are still there even though the United States was celebrating such a historical moment in history.

Having another Civil Right Movement would allow us to tackle discourse on abstract liberalism and cultural racism. With a movement we are able to tackle abstract liberalism to show that not everyone has equal opportunity and we shall not forget the past because it influences how we are today. Cultural racism allows us to have to stereotypes of people who are of different races and how they affect people of different races. My question is how can having another Civil Rights Movement help better our society with attacking issues that pertain to abstract liberalism and cultural racism? How will people ignore this and fight against having another Civil Right Movement?

  1. I do agree with you that “white do hold most of the high paying jobs....because of their race”, because I feel like this is the truth about our society. Sometimes, I feel like we need to build up our connection and network in order to obtain a job opportunity throughout different fields. I have heard across many people that the manager filters the job applications through looking at that person’s race/ethnicity. This is something that I felt disturbed with. I think we all should be proud to address the issue about race because we all come from a different culture and could to learn something from others. Some people might feel this topic will offense other if something got misinterprets, but I feel getting to know each other and understand each other is a way for us to solve the race issue.

  2. I remember reading about job applications and race in one of my classes that I took. It was saying that a job is willing to judge a person and not give them a job all because their name is closely related to their race. I was completely shocked because that person could be a really good worker but they will never get the chance to show it all because of their name. I think the only way to resolve an issue is through taking offense because otherwise we to the solution of the problem.
