Why are Blacks always "The Help?"

The question of why Black people are always portrayed as "the help" in movies and in television shows was a question that was brought up while watching the movie "The Help" (ironically enough). 'The Help' was a movie about African American maids who, while helping the White people in the film (by being their maids), were helped by a White woman so that:

A. She could write a book explaining their story/struggle, and
B. So the maids can have their story published and spread to the masses.

I guess the main question here is "why did the movie have to portray a White person to 'help' the minorities in the film?" Another question here is whether or not this is a huge issue or not. I think that the main issue in movies like The Help, Avatar, and Pocahontas that have that notion of the minorities "always" being 'help' or 'being helped' is an issue because there is no substitute for these stories about the lives of the minorities, and it could send a negative representation of them. What do you think?
